Korean actor Jang Geun Suk flies into town for fan meet

SINGAPORE : A slew of Korean artistes have been heading Singapore's way over the last year, and the latest to hit town is rising Korean actor Jang Geun Suk.
In town for a fan meeting over the weekend, Jang was overwhelmed by the warm reception he received from fans at Changi Airport on Thursday evening.Describing the welcome he received as "unbelievable", Jang went on to tell media in fluent English, "I've never been to Singapore before, but many fans were waiting for me at the airport. I don't think I'm famous overseas. So until now, I still cannot believe it."
Making his debut as a child actor at age 10, Jang established himself as a serious actor after winning praise for his work in the drama "Hwang Jin Yi", and a Baeksang Best New Actor award for his role in the acclaimed Korean movie "Happy Life" in 2007.
Although he has appeared in scores of movies and dramas, it was only after a starring role as a rock/pop singer in the 2009 hit K-drama "You're Beautiful" that his popularity skyrocketed across Asia.
Decked in a fitting black suit and his chin-length hair stylishly tied back, the charismatic star has been working out since touching down in Singapore on Thursday.
"I went swimming last night, from 12 (midnight) till 3am this morning," revealed Jang.
Believe it or not, the 1.82-metre tall actor who's currently tipping the scales at 63 kilograms - is on a diet routine!
It's part of his preparation for his role in upcoming movie "You're My Pet", where he plays a ballet dancer.
"Right now, I'm working on my next movie. My character is a ballerina, so I have to diet more... My waistline is 27 inches now, and I need to shed six kilograms. I just need (to lose) three kilograms more," said Jang.
A self-professed perfectionist - a trait which he said is similar to the character he played in "You're Beautiful" - Jang's dedication for his acting career is unmistakable.
The actor harbours big dreams. He wants to be a top star in Asia, like his peers such as singer/actor Rain, whom he looked up to.
"In Korea, it's Rain. In Japan, it's Kimura Takuya. In China/Taiwan, it's Jay Chou - I like his movie. That's my dream, so I have to be working (harder)," said the 22-year-old celeb.
Apart from acting, Jang, who's also blessed with a rich and deep voice, is keen to stage a vocal presence as well.
Viewers who've seen and heard him in the musically-themed movies and series such as "Beethoven Virus", "Happy Life", and "Do Re Me Fa So La Si Do" would know that Jang can hold a note and more.
"I don't have any plans right now, but it's my hope. It (may) be next year... I don't know, it's a secret," smiled the actor.
And when asked if there's any chance that he'll fall for a Singaporean woman, Jang's reply sent hearts a-flutter.
"There's no boundaries in love, so that's not going to be an issue. If I go back to Korea with my girlfriend from Singapore, I'll bring her to ... my home. Obviously, my hobby is cooking, so I'll bring her home and cook for her.
